Some different methods of doing seams on sportswear.

Some different methods of doing seams on sportswear.

These are a few of the different methods I use to finish seams on sportswear, was making compression leg sleeves.  Wanted to see if there were stronger seams that I can do with either serger/sewing machines or just using a sewing machine.

So far this year I have made 28 pairs of compression leg sleeves, then cover from the ankle to the upper thigh, approximately 22 inches in height.

I have to wear prescription leg stockings, these are my replacement for the not the most attractive looking medical stocking available. And much cheaper, I can make these for between 4 to 11 dollars a pair.

An example of the construction method I used on this pair of leg compression leg sleeves. This was probably pair number 4 or 5 made. Only used sewing machine. Construction with regular 100% poly 50 wt cone thread used the sewing machine and used the triple straight stretch stitch. For topstitching, used same thread and did a pressed open the seams and did a zigzag over the seam. Strong seams but up close does not look that good, but from a few feet away, you can not tell what kind of stitching I used.

An example of the construction method I used on this pair of leg compression leg sleeves. This was probably pair number 7 or 8 made. Used the serger and sewing machine, serger with 4 mock safety stretch thread stitch for construction, then topstitched with the sewing machine I use the triple straight stretch stitch (the two steps forward, then one step back). Serger thread was bulky/wooly nylon in both loopers and needle, and top stitch was 100% poly Gutermann 40 wt all-purpose thread I use the serger and sewing machine, serger with 4 mock safety stretch thread stitch for construction, then topstitched with the sewing machine I use the triple straight stretch stitch (the two steps forward, then one step back). Topstitching was a single row on either side of the seam.

An example of the construction method I used on this pair of leg compression leg sleeves. This was probably pair number 25th made. This is the method I will be using for most of the next pairs made when I am short of time. Used the serger and sewing machine, serger with 3 thread stitch for construction, then topstitched with the sewing machine I use the triple straight stretch stitch (the two steps forward, then one step back). Did two rows over top of the allowance pressed to one side. Serger thread was bulky/wooly nylon in both loopers and needle, and top stitch was 100% poly Gutermann 40 wt all-purpose thread Strong seams.

An example of the construction method I used on this pair of leg compression leg sleeves. This was probably pair number 28th made. This is the method I will be using for most of the next pairs made when I have plenty of time. Takes the longest, but only uses a sewing machine. Used the only the sewing machine, I use the triple straight stretch stitch (the two steps forward, then one step back) for construction and topstitching. Did two rows over top of the allowance pressed to one side. Thread used was 100% poly 40 wt embroidery thread Very strong seams, I would say about the strongest you can get on a domestic home sewing machine. I make sport, fetish and cosplay garments, I used this when it is going to get lots of hard use. The fabric with fail before the seams will.
